Stealth exhaust?

Default Stealth exhaust?

Hey all, does it make sense to custom fab a frankenstein exhaust system that utilizes a larger diameter piping custom welded to the stock mufflers? Can the stock mufflers flow at a higher capacity than they do in stock configuration, or would it be useless to keep them?

I'm asking because I would like the increased performance of a free flowing exhaust system, but would like to keep a more "stealth" look and avoid unnecessary run-ins with LE and punk kids.

Has anyone done this or tried this before? Thanks!

That may be fine. I think S2000 exhausts are mostly overpriced and too loud for a naturally aspirated inline 4. However, keep in mind that you're opening things up just to be bottlenecked in the end by chambered stock mufflers.

Another idea to increase exhaust flow would be to add a pair of Dynomax mufflers while retaining the stock tips. This would increase the sound level slightly and shave off tons of weight. I'm going to do this plus a cat delete (I live in the redneck California where there are lax/no emissions laws).

I just added two Magnaflow mufflers on a stock system. I originally had the resonator out but there was too much drone, so I put it back in and it sounds sweet.

It's my understanding that it's actually more important to change the piping if you want to increase exhaust flow. If you want to change the sound, the mufflers should be changed.

I'm looking to increase flow first, any changes in sound would just be a benefit. Part of the reason I wouldn't want to change mufflers is because I don't want more attention.

Is there an aftermarket exhaust system that LOOKS stock? I.E.- black mufflers? I couldn't bear to paint a nicely polished system flat black...

I think that without sufficient engine mods (ie FI or serious NA motor work) you are not going to see any gain from what you are proposing. When you consider that most aftermarket exhaust systems (including larger piping AND less constrictive mufflers) only net <5-8 whp I don't see it being worth the headache of disecting the OEM system.

If you want a different sound then I think the idea of swapping out mufflers only to keep the stock look is an excellent idea.

As for your last question I think most folks would agree that the Comptech exhaust is the most "OEM looking" or at least has a fairly low "bling factor".
