State inspection/DOT Compliance/Police
I keep seeing more and more parts and accessories installed by you guys that shouldn't pass state inspection, DOT compliance etc... The latest I've noticed is a rear spoiler that replaces the 3rd brakelight.
Here's the list of things I've noticed so far that are questionable, and wouldn't pass state inspection here. At least not by a station that's dotting its I's.
- Loud Exhaust
- No CAT
- too bright Highbeams lights
- clear/smoke sidemarkers
- cleared/smoke turn signals
- no drivers side supplemental restraint (airbag)
- and the latest...no 3rd brakelight.
There's probably more, plus some of the engine mods that must create emission issues.
Back in my teens I got a ticket once that was over $800.00 for similar infractions on a Camaro. (Loud exhast, oversize tires etc...) and do NOT want a repeat of that kind of thing. I can see officer Rambo now, calling a damn flatbed to come get it cause it isn't fit for the road in his estimation.
And also what do you guys do at inspection time? Spend a weekend putting your car back to stock first? Got a friend of a friend doing your inspections? And how many of you have been hassled by the police for these types of things? If so, what was the result?

9. Exhaust System

20. Gas caps on vehicles 2-24 model years old.
Which vehicles are required to have the emissions test?
1. Vehicles registered in designated county. Designated counties include:
Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson and El Paso counties.
2. Gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from the emissions standards, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection.
3. Vehicles between 2 - 24 years old OR upon expiration of the 2 year initial inspection sticker
We don't have the sort of draconian regulations that California and other states do.

My answer: live in a state without inspections.
I'm not sure I get why clear sidemarkers or turn signals would get you dinged on an inspection if you have amber bulbs -- isn't the requirement for an amber light, not an amber reflector?
