Hey guys.

I just picked up an 02 Berlina with only 24K miles on it. Everything seems to be 100% in order, except for one thing. When I start up the car using the "Engine Start" button, the car cranks, but is accompanied with a weird clunking sound, almost as if metal is hitting metal for a second. The car starts up fine and drives fine after that.

Any idea what that could be? Since I bought it used, I plan on getting a complete servicing on the car also. Anybody know any trustworthy shops in the so cal area where they take their cars to, or do you just take it to the dealership?

Valves may need adjusting, is my guess?

I just searched more in depth using different keywords, and found that it could be a number of things: heat shield, oil from sitting around, valves, chain tensioner(?), etc.

Anyone with this problem before figure it out?

Unlike a few people's posts, my start up clunk sound occurs on every start-up, cold or warm.

are you sure its out of the ordinary? have you ever started another s2000 and heard what its startup sounds like? because i've driven two and they both sound the same on startup, but the startup does sound really loud and kind of intense (not smooth, kinda chugs and vibrates heavily upon startup), thats just my guess... that youre just not used to it. i thought it was weird at first but then i drove another and it was the same...

i think what you mean by the start-up. i've test driven a few, and a bunch of my friends have S's, and I don't think this is normal.

The he is experiencing is more like a clanking, loose change type noise under the hood. I know cause I have heard my S do this, but not all the time. My mechanic says it's normal?
