Even if it does give you that extra hand, I'm still going to say that Honda's intent was to be a gimmick.

Yes the push button start is a gimmick. I remember reading an interview with one of the guys on the design team who said it's only there to give it the "feeling" of a purpose built track car and to pay homage to the old school.
Back on topic the 1965 Jaguar type E had a push button starter.

It isn't a case of trying to be cool. It is for convenience and less wear during cold start-ups. Is it really that hard to make sure the car is in neutral? 
So, from the looks of it... the S2000 was the first mass produced car to use an engine start button in over 35 years, ya?

There is no need to turn the key back, the ignition is either on or off... and it doesn't shut off from a stall. However, a hot stalled engine will require some extra cranking to fire back up, so maybe he just didn't crank it enough.

I got rid of the clutch interlock and LOVE it! The best part is being able to start the car without getting in, highly recommended mod.
