If a girlfriend asked me if I could satisfy her, I wouldn't cut a piece of cardboard out and ask her if it passes her requirements.

I think the finger test works fine for a quick check and that's all it was intended to do. It reportedly worked fine for anyone who approached it properly with a '00 or '01 model. However, as some have pointed out the spacing on the '02 may not be identical to the prior to years. It was recently confirmed that the stabilizer bars on the '02 are smaller than the prior to years and speculation is that the spring rates have been changed as well. If so, the combination of unannounced and still speculative suspension changes may be contributing to the different results.

It would be very interesting to confirm this (especially for U.S. bound cars). Since my brother now has a '02 S2000 (RJ_S2K), maybe the next time the cars are side-by-side, I can take a set of calipers and measure the swaybar diameters. However, driving the two cars back-to-back won't prove much since I have an x-brace on my car.
I also didn't notice a difference in ride height when our two cars were side-by-side recently.
