get AEM v2, and make an umbrella or buy one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=38634 for like 7 bucks. you'll be ok. dont swim in water.

essentially, is it better to position the heat shield depending on where water comes from? e.g. driving through a puddle means water being splashed into the intake from the bottom, so should the heat shield be positioned from the bottom?

i think it goes on top. there is a thread on how to do it, i don't have it bookmarked. but open your hood, there is a hole that acts as a drain along the left side of the edge where the hood opens. water drips down from there on top of the filter. 7 people hydrolocked during our rain here in socal. i don't believe any of them happened when the car was moving. all happened when they tried to start the car.
so the shield goes on top.
