Speedometer Calibration
#21
It might work on some cars, but not the s2000.
The s2000 (ive tested this a number of times, so noone argue with me) is accurate (with stock everything) to .2mph at 140mph.
So, to make it clearer, at 140mph, you are doing 140.2mph.
This will not help you in your case.

A simple self-calibration tool which I use to check out the speedometer of every new car or different size of tires is: Take a good stopwatch, even your wristwatch, and check how long it takes for a measured mile (using highway signposts) at a steady speed. For example, drive at a steady 70 MPH and time the mile in seconds. Take that number, use 50 seconds for example, and divide that into 3600 and you get your MPH, which for 50 seconds is 72 MPH. So in this example you are running 2 MPH over your indicated speed. Do this several times to average out any errors and do it at several speeds and you get your speedo error for free.
My '59 Austin Healey has about an 18% error so that an indicated 60 MPH is actually about 70.8 MPH. Quite useful when the ole lady is monitoring my speed, but need to know information when around the cops.

Improper driving in VA. is more serious than a 10-19 MPH over offense. It carries 6 points and I was fined $75.00, plus Court costs. It is, however, much better than a Reckless Driving conviction.

while speeding 10-19mph is listed as a four point violation,

and reckless is listed as a six point violation,

I dont want to argue with someone who has just gone through this, but that's what the website says (maybe it's not updated or I'm missing something). Also, $75 is very cheap for a ticket. I dont remember the cost exactly, but $20 over comes out to something in the $300 range.

Speedo-calibration that is notarized is a factual evidence. Most courts will accept it.
Va has a ridiculous amount of speed traps. They set up the traps not for our safety, but to rob us of money. And, mostly they prey on out-of-state motorists who are not familiar with VA speedlimits & its laws.

I personally believe that you should try to fight a ticket - it's your right. However, i would stop at lying or cheating. I think the previous poster who told you to man up and pay may have meant that since people willingly speed, they should also understand and take responsibility for the risks involved - the tickets and court appearances. As my friend in the OPD says: "If we're chasing you, you can always run. The reward is the 10% chance that you'll get away - but understand the risks, that there's a 100% chance of getting an "education" if we catch you."
My personal take is that if I am caught speeding, I will definitely go to court, but I will also go knowing I was in the wrong and pay the fine if i have to.

My attorney was the one who told me that Improper Driving carried a 6 point penalty. Clearly , the Website indicates that this infraction is three points. That would be sweet, as I have a positive 5 points at the DMV currently. Regardless, I have no problem with the outcome, as I broke the law and was caught . I feel that I was given the benefit of the doubt by the Court, and will not repeat my mistake.
