Default To spare or not to spare?

Let's get an idea of how many S2000 owners drive without the spare tire, and why. Please post any additional reasons, your plan for dealing with possible flats, or comments.

Maybe if enough are not using the spare, Muz will make a mat to clean up the look of the former spare tire area.

Good question. In another thread the figure 22 kg (24 lb) was mentioned, but I don't know how accurate that is, or if it includes the toolkit.

Does anyone know for sure what the spare, bracket, cover, toolkit (minus the tow hook), tray, and lid all weigh?

I always carry the spare and would remove it only for the duration of a track event.

The spare is 11kgs or about 25lb. A saving of almost 1%!

I have removed mine. I use a compressor, a tyre fixing can and a road assistance service. Never had a flat in 32,000 kms of driving.

I am planning to install the CD changer, amp and headunit (yep!), in the freed up space. Haven't made a decision on how it will be put together, but I'll have news in early September.

BTW more and more cars are coming out without a spare. The BMW Z3M, the Peugeot 206CC, come to mind, but there are heaps more...

The sum of the spare and tool kit is 30lbs. 22.5 plus 7.5 lbs

Luis and S2R,

thanks for the weight update.

Here's an idea from another thread (thanks to Ldogdotcom): the BMW Mobility System is a compressor (with air pressure gauge) that plugs into the car's electrical outlet, plus a can of sealant. You can buy it at BMW dealers for US$151, or online for US$134.95

Here's a link and story about the M Mobility...

I don't know what it weighs.

Currently have a "spare in a can," but will replace that with my wee compressor which I got from Fry's Electronics (the longest line in the store is the return line) and a bottle of that Australian Green Slime stuff I see advertised on TV.

That's what I said I have. 30 bucks in your favourite supermarket. I have actually used the compressor in another car and it was quick and the gauge reasonably precise. I'd say the compressor and the can do not weigh more than a couple of kilos if at all.
