I was moving fairly slow 10 MPH and pushed the brakes down fairly hard to avoid a dip in the road. The best way I can describe what I experienced was a grinding like sound and a mushy feeling to the brake petal. I just returned from my 7500mi service and was wondering if they might have screwed with the ABS. One time previously I hit the brakes hard while traveling at a higher rate of speed and I heard and felt a "BAT-BAT-BAT". the two sounds and brake petal feelings were entirely different. Any Ideas??

the ABS does that - BAP BAP BAP action. Instead of gripping down hard on your brakes the ABS sends pulses of pressure on the pads to the rotor. Just like what you felt. By doing this, it avoids the rotor and pads gripping so hard that they lock together - thus causing less controlled stopping distances. Anyways, sounds like things are working properly.

And if anyone hasn't experienced what ABS feels like, I suggest you go into a parking lot (empty of course) and test it out.

Does ABS only work when a car is trying to come to a completely stop? or will it work as long as U try to push the break to the max... on my dad's volvo I often get the pulsing feeling which is ABS but only when I'm trying to come to a completely stop fast and especially in rainy weather... when I step on the break with the same force but going at around 70mph the ABS does not come out... I'm just wondering if this is how ABS is suppose to work...

It works anytime the wheels slip during braking, hard or soft. I experienced it when we had an ice storm. The first time ABS engaged freaked me out a bit. It almost feels like a brake pad is loose or something. I guess that's a testament to how good the brake feel is in our cars.

It's perfectly normal.

Often, ABS will not engage if initially travelling at too-low a speed. The sensors detect wheel rotation and the system is not reliable at a crawl. Now on my BMW bike that speed is 2.5 MPH, so 10 MPH still sounds fast enough. Maybe you were going slower and the speedo lagged your actual?

Not wheel spin but lock up.

Not sure if the S2000 ABS sensor is the same way as the Maxima, but on the Maxima thre's a toothed wheel on the axles. There is a magnetic pick up for each corner. If the wheel is turning, the voltage will vary, telling the ABS brian that everything is ok. If there's a lock up, then the voltage will remain constant, the ABS starts to pump.
