People want to start with the best possible example because nobody wants somebody elses abandoned project.

I get that, but if I were planning to modify an s2000 I would look for something north of 70-80k but in good running order, with solid compression. Examples with under 30,000 are going for such a premium, that I think it would be throwing away money to get one and then modify it heavily.

That said, I may not have the kind of bread that OP has.

I'm with you on the illogic of buying a pristine low mileage car just to undo all its value as a low mile, stock vehicle by modifying it.

If I wanted to heavily modify a car as reliable as the S, I would look for a stock, good condition high mile car. Chances are, if its high miles, a lot of them are highway. People tend to use these cars either as weekend warriors that rack up low miles, or as 3 season dd, that rack up much more.
