Someone explain the AP1 cruise control lever
I get that if you press the button on the end it holds your car at the current speed, that's fairly straight forward.
... but there is a little switch on the lever that has three positions: "acc" and "dec" and there is also a neutral position in the middle. I have tried pressing the button in all three positions and it doesn't seem to make any difference
I assume that "acc" and "dec" stand for accelerate and decelerate?

On my car, there is a button on the dash (very hard to reach) that is the master switch turning cruise control on and off. There are two buttons on the steering wheel. One is resume/accel, and the other is set/decel. Press them both at the same time and it turns off cruise control (like tapping the brakes).
There is no lever.

My 00 AP1 (right hand drive) has a cruise control lever just below the lever which controls the windscreen wipers.
It's impossible to press 'acc' and 'dec' simultaneously because there is a switch. It's one or the other.

Just tap the brake peddle to inactivate the cruise function. This doesn't turn the cruise function off per-se but puts it in limbo until your ready to use it again. My cruise control has remained on since I purchased the car more than 2 years ago even though I rarely use it. Certainy not a big deal to reach over on the dash and activate this button but I really can't see the point of it's existance. If someone has a good explaination, I'd love to hear it.

I have no lever for cruise, I have a single button on the dash, and 2-buttons attached to the steering wheel, and as mentioned late models has a 3-button switch attched to the steering wheel.
The cruise has no levers, the turn signal is a lever, as is the light switch/windshield wiper.

Long ago I made this mod, I hated the cancel function because you get the thick plastic between the two buttons shoved right into your thumb.
Anscrew the switch
tape both buttons down so the center plastic piece sticks up, this gives you a way to get to the center plastic divide and protects the buttons
Dremel that silly thing right off
Once put back together when you push both buttons you do not get the center plastic jabbing into your thumb.
