So what's the big deal with vtec?

While I agree with you for the most part, I think that you can also look at this from the inverse position; being that without VTEC Honda would not have been able to make as much power in a practical manner for a street car. In this sense the VTEC system is allowing the car to produce more peak power because the resulting engine that would have to be created without VTEC would be essentially un-drivable or at least too much of a pain in the ass to consider a viable showroom product. After all that is the reason they created the 2.2l engine, for better low rpm drivability.
And while VTEC engagement may not hold a candle to an after market (or even newer stock) FI applications, I can say from experience that is actually felt more then some older ('80s-early '90s) factory turbo systems.

I use to have a car with a power band that peaked near 9k, and without VTEC and a milder cam profile for low RPM operation, driving in stop and go traffic pretty much sucked, so maybe my perspective is somewhat warped.

At first I was going to disagree with RED on his take.
But, then I thought about Honda's streetbikes. My CBR redlines at 14K and makes peak power above 10K. However, in order to achieve this it has to idle at 2K and is a pain to ride in stop and go traffic because it will bog if you try to pull away from a stop below 4K on a slight incline.
But, the more 'streetable' Honda (VFR), while still making peak power up high DOES have VTEC making low rpm riding much more tolerable (true, it's also a V configuration instead of inline).

I hit VTEC today, it was sweet. I think I went back in time, since I was traveling westbound.
So we've all agreed that VTEC isn't quite like a 200 shot of nitrous, but it's still funny when you're running somebody in a straight line, they're either pulling away or you're neck and neck, and then you hit that magical RPM and begin to burn them. Then again, that's how turbo-laggy cars feel, but depending on turbo, to a magnified extent. My buddy has a boosted MX-5 that has zero balls below 4000 and then absolutely rips once his turbo begins to spool. Not ideal, but it's still fun

Hey, it was a big deal 20 years ago. So was Nirvana...
I think its just another way of saying "I was in the power band" or "the cam swithced over". A guy with FI would say "I was boosting" or "I was at max boost" when I smoked that S2k.......
I think the idea of VTEC being a verb is a little silly though, "happy VTECing". Its nice on a track because you it sounds like a vacume cleaner turning on, so you always know if you are in the power band or not without having to look at the tach.

[QUOTE=kndonlee,May 14 2008, 06:16 AM] Here are the reasons I love the s2k:
-It's a convertible.
-The convertible is the fastest opening/closing compared to z4/porsche (top gear)
-The F20c powerplant is an amazing feat of engineering.
