I took a road trip to Florida late last year from Texas. On the outbound leg I had about 8000 miles on my S-02s. I ran through plenty of rain on I-10 without incident at speeds between 70 and 80 mph. On the return trip I was approaching 10K miles. What a difference! Even though the tires looked fine and the wear bars were not yet showing, the rain performance was gone. I could not exceed 50 mph without constant hydroplaning from the rears. Dry traction was not as good as before but nothing alarming. At about 12K the rear end became very loose. Full throttle take off would result in the back end stepping out on dry pavement. Any sharp turn resulted in a slide. Still the wear bars were not showing. I replaced the tires at this point because the car could no longer perform like it did when I bought it and rainy days were out of the question. The front tires are still performing very well at 13K+
Had I known the loss of performance was so great after about 8K I would have ditched the rears much earlier. You may want to be wary of your worn 02s.

Well, I certainly appreciate all of the feedback. I will be changing my rears sooner rather than later. It just irks me that I've only got 8200 and change on them, and I don't do high-rev launches, doughnuts, etc. granted, I drive with *verve* and I like to drift the rear around occasionally, but sheesh! Oh well, better safe than sorry.

Also, the dealer price of $236/rear tire did NOT include the $36 mounting fee. Doing the math it is really close either way. I think I'm gonna shop locally for tires... NOw the question is whether to replace them with PPs or OEM s-02's... Since I'm hoping to get some wheels in the next 6-8 months, I'm think I should plan for good wet-weather tires to take me through the summer. ( Rainy)

I don't know if anyone is interested but if you can organize as a group in you city you can get a discount on tires. The NSXCA approached discount tire (we go through a lot of tires) about this and a local store. Due to our use and the number of individuals involved they allow us to buy tires and wheels at wholesale plus mounting and balancing. For example the S02s for the rear of this car are about $140 each. A national club of S2K owners could arrange the same. Or simply get to know the local Discount Tire manager. If you can promise some business you can sometimes get wholesale prices.
