Smart Money Magazine Rates S2k low
#22
I am a new S owner. I've had my car for 2 weeks. I bought it because it is pure fun. I also own a BMW 530. It is a great car but different. I couldn't drive it the way I drive the S. I tested the Z4 (three times) and Z3. The Z4 is too much car, too much like the 530. The Z3 is similar to the S in pure fun, but too pricey even used. I drove my S 650 miles in two days on a business trip. It sure takes your mind off work. The other car that's not on the list is the Boxter. IMHO, this is the only other car someone buying the S would buy in lieu of the S. Everything else is not as much fun. In that sense, I agree with the view that Smart Money appeals to people looking for comfort and quiet over pure fun. For that reason, the rating makes sense...but it is pointless. BTW, I am 49 years old. Hence, there is hope...

That's nothing.
Road and Track rated "The Vanguard Group," a mutual fund family last in respect to:
1/4 mile,
0-60 mph
fun for the buck
drivability
styling.
They did like its long term appreciation and its user friendliness; but those were not considered in the scoring.

I started a thread a few months ago about older owners of S2K's. We have at least one very active member/enthusiast who is about 70 and numerous owners over 60. To the best of my knowledge, none of them have any interest in the top-four cars in Smart Money's listing.
Please don't equate age with not liking S2000's, with not driving fast and well, and with being generally useless and lifeless. You may plan to be that way when you hit 70, but the rest of us certainly don't!
In terms of Smart Money's car reviews, I would far rather take investment advice from Road & Track. Would any of us really want a car Smart Money recommended? They clearly did no testing except for a quick drive and gave entirely subjective remarks. I think you are seeing a magazine trying to echo the sentiments of its readership in order to reinforce its bond with them. In polite society, that is known as pandering.

It was a good thread, interesting reading (especially for those who are up there in age, but not in heart).
