To go from sixth to fourth, clutch in, engage fifth but don't let the clutch out, and then engage fourth and let the clutch out. That way each of the synchros gets to do it's share of the work. There are alternative ways to take the load off the synchros, but they all depend somewhat on being able to feel what the transmission is doing (through the shifter) so just learn the techniques without skipping gears, and then when you do want to skip a gear, do it in a way that won't make life hard for your gearbox.
Hey Red, wouldn't double-clutching work the same way?

Exactly!

I skip gear all the time, both up and downshifts.

Exactly. If you're going fast in 4th and slow down to like 25 and you want to take that corner at speed, you can definitely heel-toe into 2nd without going into 3rd. In fact it would really slow you down if you went into third first and then into second, unless you heel toe into third as you slow down for the corner and then hell toe again into second...which is just extra work.

I don't know the answer but I think almost all of us have skipped a gear now and then.
During normal driving it's always a possibility but as you drive and become accustomed to the feel of each shift, you'll usually know before you release the clutch. Could be the synchros not exactly lined or it could be a driver error.
I usually rev match slightly and if the shift is missed ,return to the gear that I just left then attempt to engage the proper gear again.
This seems reasonable to me since it's only one of the two choices you have. Either accept that you missed a gear or go back to where you came from.

so.. if im cruising in 6th gear at let's say 50mph, then went for a turn, slowed down to 25, is it still better to disengaged the clutch, shift to 5th, 4th, then 3rd, then engage the clutch, than if i shft from 6th straight to 3rd, and rev match?

and it seems like skipping upshifts is a common knowledge that it's bad. i usually do this in stop and go traffic, 1st, 2nd, 4th, then 6th... all this is happening between 2Krpm-3Krpm. Is my laziness killing my tranny? don't get me wrong.. i love shifting, when im driving spiritedly(is that even a word). for some reason, i thought skipping while driving normal is better for my clutch and tranny since im only disengage/engaging my clutch 4 times from 1st to 6th instead of 6x, guess i'm wrong.

Probably better to make each shift but if your intent is to miss a shift it would no doubt be better that you at least synchro'd in the next appropiate gear.
