I notice that when the engine starts, with the first ignition firing, there is a rather slight but noticable shudder of the engine.

Does anybody else notice this?

It's almost as if the motor mount is loose, but this is not the case.

My RSX, which has a similar engine has no such shudder, perhaps it has something to do with the way the engine sits in the car?

Does it sound like your engine's knocking?
I have something like this and never noticed it before. I noticed it when the weather got cold down here. It only happens when I first start the engine. At first I thought something was loose but couldn't pinpoint anything.
Anyway, I guess I will have to go to the dealership for this along with a creaking noise that's bugging the crap out of me.

I don't think I would characterize it as a knock, it's more of a vibration upon the initial starting.

Perhaps it's just the torque of the engine as the first cylinder fires.

yeah, it feels like it's about to stall. but the revs never drop completely. i only feel this in extremely frigid weather though.

its pretty normal, almost every gasoline engine does this...especially when its below 32F

Check out the stalling problems post. Try skipx's steps 2 & 3 and see it that helps.
