Default Should I sell as is/fix and sell/ or keep?

Hey All,

Need to reach out to the community who really knows and get some advice on what I should do with my 2002 s2k.

This summer I was happily driving along when the tranny in my car decide to throw out second gear completely. The car sat for almost 6 months with me just scooting it around the apt parking lot. In the mean time I bought myself a 2014 370z which I love. I finally decide to bite the bullet and take the S2000 into the transmission shop to get it checked out.

Trans is done, clutch and flywheel...done. So now I have to make a decision on what to do with the car.

Car details :

Silver 2002 s2k - 118,000 miles - custom cat-back exhaust - billman's tensioner mod - rest is stock.

My top was cut about 3 weeks after I bought the car and my seats stolen so I have a pair of Sparco seats in the car. Needs a new steering wheel wrap and a few touch ups here and there. Paint is great, one ding in the driver side door and a scrape on the rear bumper that is getting fixed anyways. Top leaks into the overhead light after replacing windshield( still trying to trace the leak down)

The motor runs great and has been well maintained.

So with that said....here are the options im looking at.

1) Sell the car as is. Like I said car is in pretty good condition and hella fun to drive but needs clutch/flywheel/ and tranny. What can I get for the car as is? Is there a market out there for someone who might be wanting to put an ap2 trans or do a motor swap on the car?

2) Put a used transmission in the car along with a new clutch and flywheel. This will probably cost me around 3k to do once said and done. Am I going to get the value out of this repair when I sell the car?

3) I can get a JDM motor with 26k on it for 4,200 bucks. Probably another 1500 to do the swap then I can maybe sell my old motor for 2000-2500. At this point I would probably be keeping the car but I only have a one car garage so it would be an outside toy. ( 370z takes that spot at least till its paid off)

Please let me know what you guys and gals think out there or if anyone is interested in the car as is let me know. The transmission shop is getting angry I haven't made a choice yet some I'm looking to do something about it this next week.

Help me out fellow s2kers...need to make a smart decision here and with the attachment that we grow to our loved ones...feels like getting some outside opinion might help me make a more rational decision.

Thanks all and looking forward to some responses.

If you like the car, just fix the transmission and keep it. A used transmission seems to be around $700 and clutch about the same. clutch job should be around $500 which should include transmission swap I believe

If the motor is fine then why swap it? I'd just get the tranny replaced and go from there. I can't see it being anywhere near 3k unless you source a brand new one.

Call places and ask how much labor is on a clutch and do not let them charge you extra to replace the tranny.

Look for a used tranny. Should be around 500 on craigs. Ive seen them go as low as 200-300. Buy cheap clutch set up then sell the car. Most wont buy a non running s2000 but im sure ripped tops wont be that bad

Thanks for the reply's all. Really helped in my decision. I went ahead and bought a used trans for 650 shipped with 70k on it. Then the clutch flywheel was around 325 shipped. Wasn't expecting it but motor mounts and trans mount were hosed so another 325 on that. Man....I love my z...but now im starting to get the s2k itch again...

been looking at seats and stuff = P sigh...gonna miss it if I sell it but hard to own two 2-seaters while living in an apt.

Thanks again.

I had a 525 whp 370z and probably buying an s2k this spring, its just too fun of a car and easily upgraded...loved my z and it was a monster but the s2k just makes you giddy when driving it on twistiest, my best bud had one for years and I did his bolt ons and top with him through the years, love these cars.

If you need any advice on the Z let me know

three month after i got My03 i detected a 1,3 cylinder misfire and cylinder 1 low compression.

I swapped it..lol

really depends on how much you like the car, seems like money its as big a issue for you.

i guess the sentimental value of the S to you means the most.

follow your heart!

Peace,
Green
