I have an 04 GPW S2000, and have owned it for over 8 years. Yes it is about as close as I can find to a current sport bike, down to the high revving engine and power and that hits when vtec kicks in. I love my S and have no regrets after all these years. I also have a ducati 996 and while they are different machines, the S hits on all 4 cylinders very well and is a great alternative to taking the bike everywhere.

Get the S2k... They are great machines!
