add another to the overevved list. Mine was overevved when a friend was driving valve tips popped off #3 and all the parts met in the middle. See under the hood post of mine.
Better, stronger , faster now.

I realize that they weren't changed at the same time. What I am suggesting is that the new oil bolts were not enough on their own, so they upgraded the pump too (later). It is obvious that the lubrication was not adequate, so 2 separate changes were made to improve it.

How hard is the oil pump to change? I haven't gone with the new oil bolts yet, so I'm curious how difficult it would be to do the pump and bolts at the same time.

yeah thats my thinking. they upgraded the bolts and found there wasn't enuf pressure for them so then they upgraded the pump. Just a guess.

Not sure how involved changing it out is.

and yes its the same pump that is on the 2.2L. It just changed at some point in the MY03 cars and has stayed the same pt number since.

Interesting theory, guys. Sure could be true... Do you guys have any info from AHM (or specs on the new pump) on this, or is this just speculation?

This is just another guess, but I wonder if the new bolts are actually WORSE than the old bolts without the new oil pump. :scratching balls:

Honda of Europe did a recall to replace the bolts without the new pump so I would guess that the bolts alone did not fully resolve the issue and the pump was the second stab at it. The four hole bolts do not have substantially more flow as the holes are smaller.. as I recall the measurements of the total orifice area shows about the same area, but maybe four outlets have different flow characteristics.

The only Honda statement regarding the bolts was "Under certain conditions, the lubrication and cooling of the pistons may be insufficient. If the engine is continued to be used in severe high load conditions this may result in premature wear of components and an increase in the engine operating noise level." So it sounds like it does address the #4 problem but it is not a dead ringer.

Add me to the list. I just had my motor replaced two weeks ago. I have a MY02 that I picked up in October 2002. I'm not sure what number vehicle I have. At about 25000 miles a started to get a tap from the engine bay. I took it to Honda, and they could produce the problem. It would only chatter after a longer trip through traffic on my way home from work. Noise went away but came back with a vengence at 30000. I took it to Honda. Apparently I had burned though 4 quarts of full synthetic oil in less than two thousand miles. They changed the oil and sent me home. Tapping worsened. I ended up taking it back to Honda for several problems. The tapping was just one. I had gotten used to it. Honda calls and says they are replacing the motor. They didn't state why.

I was told this about a year ago by a reputable source. There was no mention of a new oil pump, but I was told that if I had the oil bolts in it might have caused my failure sooner.

So it seems logical the pump was rev'd to address this. Davepk has a 03 and 01 pump out and he's gonna compare them to see whats different.
