Default Shifting Techniques

Hi everyone, i tryed to repost my thread earlier but have gotten only 1 reply so im tryin a new thread and hopefully ill get some answers. When shifting still to 2nd gear I wait for the approximate rpm to drop then gas, i have been doin this and the results are very smooth but again its like im goin too slow cuz im waiting a second for it to drop then hitting the gas and i feel like i should gas rite after i shift to keep up with the speed. On the other hand if i tried to shift like i would shift in other gears it would be jerky and why is this happening, y is this only happening when shifting in 2nd gear, i dont even have to wait for the rpm to drop in other gears and it would be smooth ( shift also at 3.5k). In additon to that i also tried shifting at 4k from 1st to 2nd and the results were pretty good but everytime i do i feel somewhat a very slight notchyness (not as smooth if i wait for rpm to drop)and it feels like im pushing the car everytime i drive which im not to comfortable with. My 2nd question is when shifting to 2nd gear do you wait for the rpm to drop then gas or just shift and gas rite away??? And what rpm do u shift to 2nd gear and how do you do it??? Much thanks and appreciation

I am sorry, I want to help but I cannot understand what you are talking about.

From what I gather from your post, you basically want to know how to properly down-shift, specifically into second gear. Right?

If so, you'll want to do a serch on "rev-matching" and "heel toe". There has been LOTS writen about both and you'll be able to find a much more coherent and extensive explanation than anything I could provide.

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if I fully understand the question, but I'll give it a shot based on what I do understand...

My technique for shifting into 2nd isn't any different from my technique for all the other gears. There should not be a need to wait for engine RPMs to drop before shifting into or applying gas in 2nd. In the S2000, engine RPMs drop pretty quickly to begin with, so you shouldn't have to wait.

However, it's normal for the 1-->2 shift to be a little less smooth than the other shifts. The higher the gear, the easier it should be to shift smoothly. You can still shift into 2nd smoothly, but it requires better timing. It took me a while before I was able to shift smoothly into 2nd in the S2000.

You can shift into 2nd at whatever RPM you want (as long as doing so doesn't cause the engine to exceed redline of course). Shifting into 2nd at 4k RPM is fine. I usually shift around 4k or 5k RPM in normal driving. You may feel some notchiness going into 2nd - my 2nd gear is notchy, and grinds on occasion, particularly when the car is cold.

Finally, this is my technique for shifting into all gears, including 2nd:

1. Let off throttle
2. Push in clutch pedal
3. Shift the stick
4. Get my foot back on the throttle (very lightly at first)
5. Let clutch pedal out
6. Apply more throttle

The timing happens with steps 3, 4, and 5. In order for the shifts to be perfectly smooth (i.e. for the RPMs to match up perfectly in the next gear), those steps need to be timed correctly. I find my shifts are more smooth if I get my foot back on the throttle with very gentle pressure (step 4) immediately - like just a split second - after pushing in the clutch pedal (step 2).

shifting to 2nd is harder than shifting at any gear, u just have to learn how to handle the clutch and shift at the right time
i think there is not 'cure' for your question

I couldn't quite understand his question either, does anybody?

When upshifting to 2nd from 1st, I usually wait til about 5K rpm to shift if it's cold out. smoothest so far w/o any gear grind/catch.
If it's nice and warm out, I usually shift around 20 mph, usually smooth.
Downshifting is the same, if it's below 30mph, than I shift to 2nd.

Someone from this board once told me that the easiest way to shift for beginners are 2nd at 20mph, 3rd at 30mph, 4th at 40mph, 5th at 50mph, and 6th at 60mph and reverse the process until you become comfortable shifting. It worked for me, thanks s2ki.

All others recommended that I just wait til 9k rpm to shift to the next gear... (that's the most fun)

sorry guys for the misunderstanding. I was talking about shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear. For me my technique is to shift and hit the gas rite as the rpm drops to the speed lvl ( the rite rpm of the rite speed) But when i do it goin into 2nd its like im letting go off the gas a second slower then shifting normal which gives it exact timing for it to be the rite rpm for the specific speed which makes it real smooth. On the other hand if i shift like i would 3rd 4th 5th 6th it will be nothcy. Do u guys do the same thing i do or gas rite away when u shift(wait a second for rpm to drop or just gas)??? Thanks

Is this your first manual transmission car??? Shifting from first to second should be THAT difficult. Are you talking about regular shifting of for a more high performance shift? Regular shifting is usually around 4500 RPM and your just depress the clutch, shift into second, apply gas and release the clutch.

just a regular shift, since this car is a bit more difficult to achieve the smooth shift to 2nd i wanted to know how everyone does it.
