Would this have damaged the car? It seemed ok later. I told him the rev limiter saved him cuz if not he would of blown the engine but I wasnt sure if damage did happned.
Anyone knows?
Your friend is fortunate that he was only at 70MPH from the downshift. From the gearing calculations, 9000RPMs @ 2nd gear is 68.4MPH. So 70MPH is only about 9200RPM. From what I heard, the mechanical limitations from valve float failure on our cars is near 11,000RPMs. I would say there would be no mechanical damage especially from minimal esposure at the over rev range. It will be a diffrent story if he was near redline and downshifted accidentally from a misshift because our gear box is so close. There are lots of people who did the misshift thus blowing their motors then taking it back to Honda for warranty. Honda can check for over revs thus voiding warrantly. I heard one guy over revved it near 13,000 RPM from redline 3rd to 2nd.

Just for fun, I calculated a redline(9000RPM) misshift/downshift from 5th to 2nd will over rev the motor to 18,947RPM. Thats if the synchros lets you in the gear. Its also interesting to note that the same misshift @ only 6000 RPM will land you at @ 12,316 RPMs.
