OK folks, here is the deal : I have now in hand a copy of a HONDA (Canada) SERVICE LETTER concerning the differential fluid, which I shall post next week when I get back to the office (i.e. have access to a scanner). The letter is in french however; the translation is as follows:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HONDA service letter
Letter number : lll-6-01
Model/Year S2000 2000-2002
Date of issue : 12 Oct./2001
Rear differential fluid for S2000
Original Honda hypoid ludricant SAE 80W90 GL-5 is available for the rear differential of the S2000 2000-2002. It can be ordered through the regular channels under P/N CB66314.
Notes:
*This product was originally supplied for motorcycles and other Honda products equipped with a gearbox/driveshaft. However, this product fullfills the requirements for the rear differential of the S2000 and can be ordered by the Honda dealers.
*This product cannot be used in the rear differential of the CR-V(use the fluid for double pump Honda P/N 08200-900-2C).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you realize the implications of the above letter ?
What was the status on this issue before the letter was issued ?
What did the dealers use ? The CR-V stuff ? Hydraulic lift fluid ?
Pierre
N.B. Why do I mention hydraulic lift fluid you ask ? Because that is what they told me they used, when I inquired about buying diffenential fluid last spring .

If the translated info is more or less intact, I see nothing that would reference any "voiding" of warranty if another fluid were to be used. This looks like something that Honda Corporate has sent to one (and not each and every) of its dealers when an inquiry was made. I don't find it surprising that Honda Co. would recommend a Honda product to one of its dealers. They're not going to say, "Yeah, use Mobil 1 or Redline (or whatever). It's just as good or better than our own stuff."

This letter doses not imply that you must use ONLY this fluid in the differential and neither doses it mention ANYTHING about warranty issues.
The information I had recieved previously, concerning original Honda fliud and its impact on warranty, was typical dealer verbal bullshit from the service manager no less (they are trying to weasel out of repairing my vibrating rear-end under warranty)! This letter I got from the clerk at the parts counter who had been brain-washed by the service manager, and who also was surprised at the actual letter's innofensive content.
In fact this letter opens the door to using MULTI-GRADE fluid as opposed to what is recommended in the owner's manual. I had used 75W-90 .
BTW, a parallel discussion on this subject can be found at UNDER THE HOOD : LEFT-REAR VIBRATION WHEN TURNING RIGHT.
