I was at my dealer yesterday and asked to purchase differential fluid and was handed SAE 80W-90 Honda gear oil. I was also told that a SERVICE BULLETIN (Honda Canada) had been issued to the effect that this is the ONLY fluid to be used in the diff which shall not void the warranty.

Anyone else hear of this and if so can you get a copy to scan and post for the interested parties (everyone reading this) ?

Possibly true....there may be special additives or friction moddifiers in the oil to help with the functioning and operation of the Torsen rear end. Thats my guess.

Would be nice to see the bulletin. All the documentation I have seen simply calls for a GL5 or GL6 lubricant with no mention of a Honda product. Very different from the transmission that specifies the Honda fluid. They could hardly void the warranty for following the owners manual.

Agreed. Could you have your dealer make a photocopy of the TSB or fax it to 760-738-1115. Fax is best since I wouldn't need to scan it. I'll add it to the library.

When I changed mine the dealer only had bulk and told me to go to the parts house and get diff fluid. When it drained, it was very gray and moly like in appearance. The new is clear amber.

I just hate it when some little mealy mouth Napolean at the dealership starts to quote "this" and "that" and use scare tactics like this. It's like they're lecturing little children or something. Go back and get a copy of the bulletin. Tell him to put up or shut up. If he gives you a copy, then we can all take it to our lawyers when the time comes. (Woodwork, where are you?) If the dealerships have their way, we would use nothing but Honda air filters, oil filters, coolant, oil, grease (how many here are "sold" on Shin Etsu (sp?) grease for the seals ), hinge & lock lubes. Hell, maybe we should be putting only official Honda air into our tires. Anybody been scared into buying your tires only through the dealer? Geez, Louise!

Probably, haha. When he used to own a Viper the dealer probably told him that the oil was some special blend only available through them @ $400 bones a quart, and if he decided to use some other oil it would not only void his warrantee, but be terminal...lol.
