S2000's Depreciating in Value?
I have a MY00 and love it. even though i cant drive it for the time being because i need a new clutch. anyways, i went on KBB. com and noticed that my cars value is less than what i still owe on it. This really sux. I dont have a 30,000 dollar car anymore. its like a 18,000 car. should i even worry about this? why is this cars value depreciating so much? i guess the only way it can be worth more is by adding some nice mods to it. I just hate seeing so many people selling their S2ks for cheap. i think if people werent so reluctant to sell them, this modern classics value would remain high.

Your car is now almost 5 years old..of course it won't be worth 30k any more, but you have to look at the percentage of value that it is holding. You are looking at about 56%, which by any standard is pretty good.
On that note, how many miles do you have, a my00 with low mileage is still worth around 20-23k or about 65-70% of its original value. Don't get yourself down about it, its a natural thing that happens to all cars...the S holds its value much better than 99% of the cars out there. If you are looking to sell, do it privately, you would get a much higher amount rather than ebay or dealer trade.

You think that is bad? I traded my '99 10th Anniversary Miata in because I couldn't find anyone to buy it privately. I had it in Autotrader and the Miata.net classifieds for over a month and got one bite on it. It had 56k miles, immaculate condition with a hardtop. We're talking a $29,000 Miata here and I was asking $13,750. The problem is, there are '99 Miatas going for less than $9,000 and at the same time, Mazda is giving brand new $23k Miatas away for <$18k. So, who the heck wants to pay almost $14k for a 5 year old car when you can get a brand new one for $4k more and possibly get low, new car financing? I wound up trading my Miata in for $9,400 with hardtop. That's about 32% of its MSRP. Yes, I got taken for a ride, but I wanted this S.

If you want to see a car REALLY depreciate in value, look at the evolution 8.
The people in this thread are right. The s2000 holds its value better than most cars in the market today. Don't be so bummed. Cars aren't like houses, they drop in price as time goes on.

I've read that kbb uses a standard depreciation formula for calculating their values. Type, rarity of car & recent sell prices are not taken into account. Others like NADA take these & other factors into account.
An MR2 Turbo is worth much more on NADA than kbb.

Cars are horrible investments in general.
Right now, car prices are in the toilet. That's why all the domestics are offering 0% financing. It is KILLING the used car market.
In general, you loose a LOT of value the minute you drive a car off the lot.

Wow, thanks alot for the info guys. and no, im not planning on selling my S. i love her too much to do that! im keepin her forever and modding her till im completely satisfied. i did not know that the S holds its value more than other cars. my car has 60k on it right now. i bought it with 41k about 15 mo. ago. Its weird that someone mentioned my car is going on its 5th year. because everytime i sit in it, feels like im driving the hottest, newest sports car out there. : )

I feel the same way you do, I plan on keeping mine as long as I can; I think if you keep it in good shape the value will "bottom out" over time and hopefully it will gain value and become more rare as other S2000s are trashed and fewer remain on the road...
