imho I would. Driving an S three months out of a year is better than not driving an S at all.
I guess that's true but if you are paying on the car and required to keep it insured while registered for 9 months out of the year that you can't even drive it...that does not sound worth it.

We are spoiled in the south and even mid-atlantic. There are maybe 2 weeks per winter unsuitable for S2000 driving due to snow or icy roads.
That we are! I do drive the S year 'round

Other than maybe a week or two in January when the ice storms and a little snow comes, same here.
I put snow tires on mine every winter not because I will drive in any snow but because they actually grip cold pavement unlike ultra high performance summer tires which are rock hard when it's below freezing.

So, I'm confused by the original post.

Does he mean a 2nd car for the family? Or a 2nd car for himself?

I live South of Cleveland, similar winters as Chicagoland. I store my S from mid November to late March. It works out okay because thats when I do all my mods for the next autocross season.

Chicago has some very nice summer weather too... if you already have a decent daily driver that can handle winter duties, why does your 2nd car need to be able to do the same things? Further, you can mod your S to be an acceptable winter car. You'll have a hard time modding the WRX to be a 2 seater drop top.

I say go with the S based upon its convertible fun factor. Tell your friends to sort it out on which one is taking the bus. You're not their taxi, anyway.

Given that this will be your only car, you need space to carry passengers, you only have experience driving a FWD car (the transition from FWD to AWD will be easier than it would be to RWD) and you will have to drive in snow I would recommend the WRX over the S2000. Make sure the transmission is in good condition as the early WRXs were known for weak transmissions.

It depends, are you a Kirk or a Spock?

Spock: Logic dictates that the WRX is the most logical choice.

Kirk: Prime directive be damned. Get an S2000.

Yea... WRX

EDIT: I'd look into the Mazdaspeed3, GTI, and other "hot hatches" if you don't "Need" AWD.

When I did this segment search, I thought the WRX interior was just awful. Because it was going to be my daily driver, that interior, stereo, tech features, and comfort were very very important. And in those areas, the WRX suffered when compared to the other two.

The GTI was best for features and interior, but I couldn't stomach paying significantly more for a 2010 GTI with 200hp vs a 263hp speed3 with slightly lower quality interior experience.
