I originally had similar feelings after first driving an S after years of owning a VTEC DelSol. Maybe it's the excellent build of the S that doesn't let you think your moving along as quickly as you really are. In the DelSol, you noticed it more because basically, it was a souped up civic. Sort of like riding in a wooden roller coaster at 60 mph vs. a steel coaster, the wooden one is a lot scarier. I'll tell you this though, I couldn't hit 60 in 2nd gear in the DelSol.

<sigh> I've never felt this... whenever I let my friends drive they are soooo scared of hitting vtec... Maybe it's my driving that scares them (if your theory is correct)..
I must feel this WOT 1st to 2nd passenger feeling.

I test drove a Mazda 3 the other day and it FELT faster than my S2000. I know it is not faster, but some cars just feel that way for some reason. I suspect it's the torque coming on earlier.
The S2000 feels crazy fast when your a passenger and the driver shifts from 1st to 2nd at WOT.

Someone should post the torque curves for the s2k and a few other "commuter cars". I bet the reason we feel slower is that we actually have less torque on the low end than a Mazda 3.

I felt the same way as the original poster, the first time I test drove the car. It felt about as quick as an Accord. I also test drove a 350Z and that car needs only a light touch on the gas to make it go. Plus, the exaust of the 350Z has a much sweeter sound than the S2000. But once you learn how to shift in the S2000 it's a lot of fun. If I want VTEC power and I'm going about 40mph, I shift into second and floor it. At 60mph, that's where VTEC will kick in, in 3rd gear. 80mph, 4th gear hits VTEC. And so on(!) Hard to be aware of that the first time you drive the car and I'd say it's even difficult to be sure what gear you're even in sometimes, the first time.

Well, I'd re-cant my previous comments.
I drove a 2005 again, and did what someone here recommended - hit the redline, and shifted to stay in the VTEC.
WOW. It was a different car! Im sold. Currently in the process of selling my GTI... looking for a S

[QUOTE=s2kvolfan,Jun 27 2005, 09:15 PM] This is why if I ever buy a new S2000, I will make sure that it was never demoed... VTEC before breakin is hell on these cars.... means problems like more oil consumption later.

It's nice to know that other people have had the same experience. And that when I really get to drive it to redline, the car will show its true colors. I used to have a lot of fun keeping the Prelude in vtec, especially on twisty roads. I'm sure that it will be even better when I get an S.
I do have a question if anyone can answer. Maybe I should start another topic, but...
For those of you who have driven both versions of the car, which do you feel is better when driving in vtec?
I was thinking that it would be easier to stay in vtec with the pre 04 because of the higher redline. Does anyone have the experience in both?
I don't know why they couldn't lower the engagement point when they lowered the redline. It kinda makes me feel cheated, really. I want the best of both!...
