S2000 Stolen
#12
Hey good news everyone! The cops found her!
She was left abandon in front of a towing companies lot. I was able to drive her home, waiting on insurance to see what they say. She has a few scratches, the dip has been peeled and some other minor things.
They got rid of one of the plates, so the cop just had me put the front plate on the back...
So while I'm waiting to hear back from insurance, is there anything I should ask for besides what needs to be repaired?
Do you guys think I could/should ask for an engine compression test, engine/tranny/diff. Fluid change?
Thanks!

How did they steal the car? Did they swap the ECU, did they have a key that matches your ECU, or did they just tow it away?
If they just towed it away and you found it in front of a tow yard did they even put any mileage on it? Were you able to just hop in and start it up and drive it home?
They also only went through the trouble to tossing the rear plate, but they left the front plate on? They peeled all of the plasti-dip off as well?

No they didn't do anything like that. It's really quite silly to be honest. They first got into my wife's Jeep that was some how unlocked. The wife doesn't know if she forgot to lock it or if our 7 month old that was playing with her set of keys hit the button to unlock it. Anyway they rummaged through her car and took my son's little bag of toys of all things. There was a diamond necklace, a passport, personal mail. Of all the things to take, they take a bag of baby toys... But anyway I guess we had a spare set of keys to the S and they found it and that's how they got access without really doing any damage.
So the insurance company got back to me. Since all of the "damages" are under my deductible amount($500) it's really up to me if I want to file a claim or not. They advised that I would have to foot the bill of any diagnostics and if they even found something, they mechanics would have to link it to the theft of the vehicle before insurance would reimburse me for the diagnostics and the repair.
With that being said I plan on doing a Engine/Tranny/Diff fluid change. I plan on having a reputable shop do an engine compression test, is there any other kind of diagnostics that I should perform? Also could someone either link or tell me what my compression rate should be for a 2001 stock S2k with about 47k miles?
Thanks

Congratulations on finding her unharmed again. Very strange that the took off one plate and the plastidip. Maybe the idiots thought this was "Grand Theft Auto" and that they could claim the car as theirs as long as it looked different . At least it wasn't stripped out. Compression should be between 200-220, maybe more, with an engine in good condition. It's good to see something like this turn out good. If you don't mind the scratches, don't file for insurance. If you can prove that the thieves did those, then file and have the insurance company repaint the damaged parts, it's up to you.

I see the thieves had the good taste to put the car back to silver!
Glad she's home again!
The debate to lock or not lock a convertible is legit. I usually leave mine unlocked. They can have what's in it -- ain't much.
