Flat bed with a winch works well... not sure how this one was taken tho.

<sigh> sorry VTEC9000 to hear about your plight. Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to see you get more $ for the theft, the offer from the insurance co is pretty fair. Aftermarket mods are not covered unless you add them to your policy. I hope you can negotiate with them though and get a little more out of them. Good luck.

Back up a flatbed... Hook up a wench... Drive away.
This seems to be the preferred method of stealing any cars these days. They can work on the car later.

Also, switching ECUs has worked really well to get around the immobilizer on other Hondas. I'm not sure if thieves are up to the same tricks on the Honda.

Or perhaps the owner needed the money and had his car stolen.... I think that is more common than many believe. (not meaning the person who started this thread... Just people in general)

Yup, I would just take the insurance company's offer. As you can see from my sig, I've had an LS ang ITR stolen from me and lost tons of $$ when they were stolen. I feel for you since they wouldn't give me a penny for my mods which included 2-month old rims. Thought I learned my lesson, but I've put around $6K into my '02.

I use a clifford alarm and the autolock now even tho I hear theives can by-pass them.

I've made it very clear to my insurance company (USAA) that I have extensive mods and have confirmed in a policy rider that their value will be covered in the event of theft or damage. You need to do this up front and in writing, otherwise the insurance companies will try to screw you every chance they get, which they are entitled to do if there hasn't been a prior agreement on these things.

They do have the "waive the depreciated value" endorsement. Some companies call it "loan/lease" coverage, because that's when it comes in handy. If your car was stolen and you made 2 payments, the lender still wants their money, but when you drive off the lot the car is depreciated to below your loan amount and you will owe the difference.

Also, if you didn't declare mods on your car, you might be really out of luck. If you do declare mods, be sure that your company is 'mod friendly'. Some companies will get rid of you if you modify your car for performance.

Yeah Flatbed trucks. My dad's client parked his Porsche on the street for about an hour and came back to find the only thing left of his car were 2 black streaks the tires left.

I hate people that have to steal other people's $hit. Sorry to hear, good luck with the insurance company.

Besides the obvious (garage, alarm, good lighting, etc), are there things that we can do to deter thieves with flatbed trucks?

Drive a sh!tty car? Probably not a whole lot. I used to sell car security systems, and I can tell you I have seen alot of different tricks used. Ultimately though, all these systems are not foolproof. They only DETER a good number of would-be thieves. If a pro wants your car...they will get it. There was a story I remember going around the auto security industry folks about a guy in Miami that locked his exotic car, alarmed the heck out of it, and chained it to a tree at his house. He returned one day to find the car parked backwards, re-locked up with a note inside saying, "When we want your car, we'll come and get it."

I guess all we can do is insure it, and try not to garner too much attention to our car...yeah right.
