use a blow dryer to heat it up first, then dental floss to separate it from the surface of the car. then use some adhesive remover like goo gone to take off the residue

No goo gone will not harm the finish. It will remove all the wax though, so you will need to wash it good afterward and protect it with whatever wax/sealant you use.

If you end up with some swirl marks in the paint after rubbing the adhesive off, you can buff them out before waxing. I had some serious swirls afterward, but they came out very easy with my PC and some mild polish (XMT 1)

I used the 3M adhesive remover from local auto store.
