Default S2000 Scam

I contacted a person with an AP1 for sale. It has a matching oem hardtop and really low miles for like 8 grand. This is what I get back. Most likely a scam but....

Hello,

PICS ATTACHED !
Due to the high volume of internet scams, i will send the car to your
home address COD ( CASH ON DELIVERY ) so in this way this will be a safe
transaction for both of us. As you probably noticed, the price is rather
low, the reason I selling the car at this price is because i have to pay
18000 usd for registration here in Portugal. The car is here in my
garage in Portugal. I can drive the car here, the insurance is still
available until next month. When insurance expire, i can't drive it, so
i have to register the car here. I can't spend 18000 usd for
registration so i have to sell it. Now, I can't come to USA to sell the
car because I'll spend money and lose more time, my only chance to sell
this car is to find a buyer in the U.S. or another country. I can send
the car to your home, transport will take approximately 10 working days,
after you receive the car you will have another two days to inspect it.
When the inspection period ends, the transport company will contact you
and if there are any issues with the car. If all is good, I'm sure it
will be, you will be able to transfer your name in the title to your
local DMV.
I give you the chance to receive the car at your home address BEFORE i
receive my money for it.
PLEASE SEND ME YOUR PHONE NUMBER AND WE WILL TALK ALL DETAILS.

Thanks

Peter Gonzales

My question is...what could be the harm in giving my phone number away besides the person selling my number to telemarketers?

If you have to ask, then you already have your answer. I'll tell you anyway... Don't respond.

Talk to him, scope him out and get a feeling for it. If anything comes off sketchy or weird, dont do it.

+1. Only a great fool would waste any time on this, or someone who does not value his time at all (which in my book is a foolish person).

I asked for the VIN. They sent it and again asked for my Phone number. I googled the VIN and found an add with same pics listed for 23800. Thats alot more than 8000 and more on target for a my2000 car with 9000 miles! I attached that listing and asked why they decided to drop the price so much. I doubt I'll hear back.

A little digging doesn't hurt. Not sure giving your phone number would hurt either, but I wouldn't do that till you are a little more confident with what you find. Report back though - interested to see what is going on.

I would just totally ignore him. Honestly, you don't know who he is or what he will do with your number.

Telemarketer is no big deal but there have been phone scam calls that if you answered, you would have to pay $30 for each minute you are on the line. Whatever it is, it is not worth it.

Another thing is, why is he so keen in selling his S2000 to the US? Why not elsewhere? With all the trouble he would have sold it (at least easier and more convenient) to someone else in Portugal or another European country...

Having anything to do with scammers is a risk and not worth the time or effort. If you think you can mess with them and waste their time, all you are doing is wasting your own. Do you really want some thieving low-life scum to have your phone number so he can do whatever he wants with it, like post it online on some free hook-up site for alternative sexual orientation s&m bondage fans looking for fresh meat?
