S2000 motor oil discontinued?
#61
I bought my '06 in '10 with just under 20k miles on it and when I got it home, out with the old oil(?) and in with the new oil(Mobil 1 10/40 H M). Now have 132k miles on it all over the western 13 states from 282' below sea level to 14,245' above sea level. It works for me.

Based on some comments I see here, I get the impression that some people truly believe room temperature 0W-30 is "thinner" than 10W-30 at operating temps. Some also believe "thicker" oil during startups is better for your engine than oil closer to the viscosity of hot oil. They don't realize that oil pressure goes up quicker with oil that is not as viscous, and minimizing the engine revolutions with no oil pressure results in less wear than more RPMs without pressure with a more viscous oil.
I have been using Amsoil 0W-30 for almost all of the 375,000 miles I have on my '03 S2000. That doesn't prove it's better than other viscosities but it's compelling evidence that it isn't doing any harm. I'm still on my original tct and have never had problems with it. And since your tct needs oil pressure to function properly, the argument for 0W-30 is pretty good.

Same here except i am now running Pennzoil pure platinum with zero consumption. Wonder what it is about mobil 1?

I haven't been sold on switching to 0 on this engine personally, though I understand the theory behind cold/start up flow is sound. Just my own comfort level. Remember there is still the TCT that runs off initial start up oil pressure to prime effectively, and being a known weak link I prefer to keep oil pressure higher on start up. I would think there is a pretty significant pressure drop on 0w -10w in the first few min of start up. To those that are experiencing timing chain slap on start up, pay attention to what oil you are using. It plays a part. But it wont fix a failing TCT altogether.
I've settled on Redline 5w40 for various reasons, it is overly expensive but at one oil change per season I don't mind. Lots of good oils out there through.

My timing chain slap disappeared when I switched to Billman's TCT, and has never come back, it happened regardless of oil viscosity I was running.

I have been running 5W-30 and have eliminated the odd bit of blue smoke that used to puff out the rear after some spirited driving, I did install a catch can but there is nothing on the sighttube yet. Still have the timing chain slap(rattle snake noise on cold start) the odd time though as the oil has not changed that. Might have to upgrade my TCT one day even though it has low mileage.

Great info Joey.

I wonder about those reports too. It does seem an AP1 issue. I have run Mobil 1 (0W-30) since I acquired the car at 30K miles, it is an 09. Now with 64K miles I have never added oil between changes. Frankly the oil level has never changed one single "x" on the dipstick. Not one millimeter.

Old advice from a tribologist fan of the S2000
I bought a 2003 S2000 and still own it. I recall a lot of discussion about break in oil and the comments of a certified tribologist (oil specialist) back in the day. He advocated an early change and in kind replacement of the factory "break in oil" which had extra additives (moly if memory serves). He advised using Pennzoil 10W30 + Valvoline MaxLife Engine Protectant which had the same properties as the factory break in oil. I did this at 1,395 and again at 5,436 miles. Then at 10,215 I converted to his highly recommended Lubrication Engineering LE8130 Monolec 10W30. All these changes were with OEM 15400-PCX-004 Toyo Roki filters & 94109-14000 washers. Still use the LE8130 to this day.
I also did early changes with transmission [50/50 mix Redline MT90 + MTL] and differential [LE607 (GL-5)] fluids.
