Default S2000, mechanical over rev?

Ap1 03. I Was driving fast, shifted from 2nd into 3rd at 9k rpms, and it locked me out of the gear. But I'm starting to question if I shifted into 1st by accident. It locked me out of the gear regardless, but the car revved high. Was it a mechanical over rev or just me revving high since I most likey missed a gear?

Mechanical over rev can only happen if you engage the wrong gear for the speed you are going. If you were locked out of entering a gear and just in neutral you can't mechanical over rev.

If it sounded like it rev'd higher than 9k and you felt it, then you caught the gear. If you were still in neutral and pinned the throttle, it would just bounce off the rev limiter at 9k.

Is it even possible to enter first gear at those speeds and rpm without really forcing it? Mine doesn’t like going into first unless I’m nearly stopped, and I’ve found that to be the case with most cars.

I dont know about top of 2nd gear speeds, but it is quite easy (Damned near video game easy) to downshift from 2nd to 1st in the S2k. One of he the only cars I have autocrossed that makes shifting into first an actual thing :P I can also do it super easy entering a very slow spot on a short track near us. I am rev matching when I do it, but I have also just noticed it will go right in either way.

Again, not sure how hard it is at the top of 2nd though.

But as mentoined, if it never went into gear, you did not mechanically over rev the engine. It probably would have tried to lock up the rears if you actually got in in 1st at 9k in 2nd. You certainly would have felt major engine braking going on.

My 1st is locked when above a certain speed. Iirc anything lower than 10mph I can shift into first.

If you are uncertain, pull the cover and inspect the retainers.

In a dark past I actually did the 1-2-1 @ 9k so it's definitely possible.

There's no mechanical lock.

Its just difficult to stuff it into 1st at high speeds because it will be a LOT of speed compensation from the synchros.

Think of the synchros as little clutches. They use friction to synchronize the speed of two shafts moving at different speeds.

Anyway...
Some people shift like gorillas. Idk why. Maybe they think the shifter is a banana.

If you use your entire heft and force the shifter into the gate...then...yes, its quite possible to go from redline in 2nd gear to 1st gear in some sort of gorilla arm related mistake.

These silverback MF's gotta relax. Its just a shifter, FFS.
