S2000 Losing Favor?
#21
Personaly, I think it is ok the s2000 is off the radar. Miatas and boxters are a dime a dozen. It is ok to have a reliable good looking car that is still unique, and despite a 5 year run is still holding it's own from a perforamance standpoint

The s2000 recently came in 5th overall for Road and Track's Best All-Around Sportscar comparo, beating out the 350z, Benz SLK, BMW Z4, and Viper SRT10. But yeah it is gradually slipping out of the limelight, primarily imo because honda is doing nothing to compete with other cars that are being given more power every few years (new SLK, new Boxster, etc).
edit: oops, guess I should have read the thread first, this article was already mentioned a few times.

surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet (or I didn't see it here) -- in the current issue of Car & Driver - there is a review of the new Mustang Convertible - in that revie wthe S2000 is listed as the benchmark of chassis stiffness for open top cars.
IMHO -Not too shabby for 5 year old that is 'losing favor?'

my opinion-
it's not that s2000 is losing favor,
it's just that new/ future cars are too dang good.
with s2000's price, you can get other cars that perform just as well if not better,
PLUS more space, comfort and features.
if you spend $20k more than s2000's price, you can get into supercar territory.
there's actually no reason to buy s2000 anymore,
unless if you reaaallly love the car.
(just like mr2, rx-7... blah, blah...)

the boxster and slk came out a few years before the S and just received a major update this year, if honda follows the trend, a huge update should be in 2008 for the S.

Interesting that the R&T article critisized the S2000's lack of cargo space, yet praised the Corvette because of it's 'generous' trunk space in which 'a small golf bag' can fit.
Funny, I've seen not one, but TWO golf bags in the trunk of an S2000.
Not critisizing the 'Vette at all, it never ceases to amaze me that the (otherwise) lackluster engineering department at GM can consistently produce such a great sports car. Still, that 6 liter pushrod V8 is only pumping out 66 HP/Ltr. Almost exactly half what my F20C can acheive, hardly awe inspiring.

I wonder whether the S2000 could have finished ahead of the NSX, had it also been included in this particular comparison.
Would the NSX have lapped faster on track? Almost certainly. But factor in the emphasis placed on value and highway manners, and it makes one wonder.
I suppose the NSX is more comfortable day to day than the S, but since I've never driven one I guess I don't know. The S is definitely the value winner of the two, proven by the fact that I own one!
