Have you ever driven one? Have you ever seen one beat the pants of much more powerful and expensive cars at an autocross? The Miata is a great handling car and is a blast to drive in the twisties. Much more forgiving than the S2000.

A front wheel drive car over a rear wheel drive convertible? Not me.

Okay, I haven't driven an ITR or Miata before, but here is a real world data point for you:

I live at the end of a 4.5 mile long, twisty road that climbs from 300ft elevation to 2500 ft. Most of the road is 1.5 cars wide and it is never much more than two cars (cars, not lanes), with LOTS of corners, six hairpins (radius under 20 feet) and three cattle grates. The only time to drive this road fast is at night when you can see oncoming headlights, because virtually all the turns are blind due to trees and mountains.

That said, we own a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Volvo S70 and the S2000. My neighbor has an Integra and an older 'vette.

My best time in the S2000 on this road is a smidgen under 5 minutes. This means I am hitting 90mph occasionally and taking most corners at 50-60mph. I do this usually WITHOUT using VTEC and I don't think I even push the car to its limits. (Since traction loss either plants me into a cliff or launches me off of one...) The road usually takes me about seven minutes if I'm not really pushing it.

In the Jeep, going all out, I can't get under 10 minutes. The Volvo - around nine. My neighbor's BEST time in his Integra is 7.5 minutes, and that is pushing as hard as he can muster, and he's pretty crazy. He can muster 6.5 in the 'vette because of the greater acceleration, but I don't think he corners as sharp for fear of scratching it.

Totally anecdotal data, I know... but this thing seriously corners like its on rails, and accelerates like a Porche. There really is no comparison to your typical "coupe". It's just not in the same league.

Gotta agree with the Captain here. I traded a Miata for my S2k. In my opinion there is no better handling raodster for the price than a Miata. If it's having fun going through the mountains, I'm sure the Miata will provide all of that, with the thrill of a roadster. If you have $10K more to spend you will enjoy the twisties more in an S2K. If you think you need to be somewhere faster there certainly are other cars that can out perform on an autox, but I don't think that was shea bird's question. I for one am a bit tired of seeing people bad mouth other cars, especially those that have never owned them. The Miata is a great little car for the price. For those who need the speed, maybe the Z 06 is where you should be. Just my opinion.

S2000 is an amazing car....But for handling, especially off pavement, etc.. get a WRX.....the beauty of all wheel drive...
