S2000 in everyday traffic?
#1
Althought the S2000 is rated well, I'm reading in different journals information regarding the S2000 not being conducive to normal traffic (examples below)and would appreciate your thoughts/comments. I'm getting closer to buying one but this does concern me a little bit, since the majority of my driving will be in normal city traffic during the week and this will be the only car I own.
Thanks,
Dawn

"its noisy, hard-riding, and not very rewarding to drive smoothly in normal traffic because of the engine's need to be reveed." (Consumer Reports)
"Problem is that, when below 6000 rpm (the transition point), the S2000 feels about as lively as a Civic Si- no slouch in its own right, but not in the league of the M Roadster." (Road & Track)

I sometimes wonder what roadtesters take before writing their stuff!
The Civic SI is very easy to drive in traffic due to its pleasant controls and low torque. By definition then, so is the S2K! Personally, I wouldn't want to drive a Lamborghini Diablo in traffic. The S2K is fine. (It's still a Honda)

Yes...the S2K sucks in normal everyday driving under 6k (that is, if you like torque).
If you dont mind Civic like performance when under VTEC, then no problem.....
I personally find the S2K a very poor everyday driver for the money....you either buy the car to track it, or drive like a mad man on the freeway.....
If you want an everyday driver, save 15 grand and buy a Civic EX.

Dawn: I drive Melissa every day in city traffic. It's not an Accord, but it does offer something else. Fun
It's much lighter on it's feet and I enjoy the heck out of back street driving. I hate sitting in line at lights so I usually get off the main road and take the back streets. That's where the S2K really shines. Find someone with one and go for a ride. I think you'll be pleased.

no car with a clutch is a dream in traffic...
but then neither is traffic something we long for!
mine is an everyday driver, and i hit traffic in lots of areas. i find that i look for the long way to work-
to enjoy the car and to avoid traffic.
i would hate traffic in any car!!!

Dawn,
The S2K is plenty quick under 6000rpm. But then honestly, in traffic, how much speed do you want? Sure it doesn't pull tree stumps, but it's fine in traffic. It really doesn't suck in traffic...
The car is not harsh... it's rather comfortable. I enjoy driving this car in everyday traffic... and I get a lot of it, I live in Houston...

Dawn,
actually, one of those quotes is 100% right: "The Honda isn't very satisfying to drive in everyday traffic."
It is much more satisfying on the track, or a twisty country highway. But if you have to drive a car in everyday traffic, I find the S2000 much more satisfying than almost any other car.
Don't let 'em scare you away .

Here's my response:
1) "The Honda isn't very satisfying to drive in everyday traffic." (Consumer Reports)
No car is satisfying to drive in traffic. It doesn't matter if it's a Porsche or a Mercedes.
2) "its noisy, hard-riding, and not very rewarding to drive smoothly in normal traffic because of the engine's need to be reveed." (Consumer Reports)
All convertibles tend to be noisy. As far as hard-riding goes, it doesn't feel that way to me. It's a very comfortable ride. I commute a lot, so ride comfort is important to me. Trust me, it's not an issue. Again, no car is rewarding to drive in traffic.
3) "Problem is that, when below 6000 rpm (the transition point), the S2000 feels about as lively as a Civic Si- no slouch in its own right, but not in the league of the M Roadster." (Road & Track)
There's plenty of power under 6k rpm, and that's how I drive during most of my commute. Even under 6k rpm it's still faster than a lot of cars. As far as acceleration goes, it'll hold it's own against the M roadster.
