However, some of the engine technology may well have been a byproduct of the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder racing bike engines that Honda produced in the early '60s.
The S series engines were specifically designed for cars and were quite different from a bike in many ways including the use of a car style gearbox rather than a sequential shift bike gearbox. Other car engine features werewater cooling and the location of peripheral components such as water pump, alternator, starter motor, coil etc.
I think the reason you are thinking motorcycle engine is because both the S500 and S600 were chain drive (like a bike). As a matter of fact the successor (I use this term loosely) vehicle to the S800, the Honda 1300 was far more motorcycle like in its design (for example, it was air cooled) than any of the original S models.

I think that the S2000 has the distinction of having the highest revving engine around, motorcycles and racing cars excluded, but the RX-7 rotaries may come close. The 3rd generation ('93 to '95) in the USA were twin turbos, electronically limited to 7200, but the older first and second generation models could rev somewhat higher, and may have come close to 9000 rpm. Does anyone out there have any specific numbers? Those earlier RX-7's did not have electronic rev limiting, but did use a buzzer to audibly warn the driver of high rpm, since the engine noise did not go up very radically with rpm.

i like dan carney's quote (page 68 for anyone who cares):
"the car's 2.0-liter, 240 horsepower engine has the highest output per liter of any normally aspirated motor sold. It revs to a stratospheric 9,000-rpm redline, and it goes farther before the rev-limiter puts an end to the festivities." !!!

by the way, i think that the 240 horsepower is at 8300 rpm...
honda's website says redline is 9000. of course that is the marketing dept talking!
maybe redline is 9000 and the rev limiter is 8900?
i have hit the revlimiter several times, and it actually seems to be over 9k (but who is really looking down there at that point!?)
