S2000 Buyer vs. 350 Z Buyer
#23
For the record, I did the magizine research and bought the S2000. Power to Weight Ratio was one of my most important factors. That and a 30K-ish budget put me in the S2000.
Here's the article that decided me:

ive always had a lust for ANY "tuned" honda. i knew the s was out there and was a badass car but it was never even close to being in my head to even look at. simply bc i could not afford it. i bought a civic a couple years ago, tuned it a litle and started road course racing it im very infatuated with handling.. well i had a income change(for the better) and immediately thought... "i got to get out of this stinky loud car...."
my first thought s2k of course! but like the op said i started research. mainly here on s2ki which only confirmed interest. i decided to go take test drive. hit vtec once got a little sideways with vsa off and i was hooked. bought my MY 07 the next day and have never looked back.
btw, i was a valet for almost 3 years. drove numerous 350z and hated how their clutch and interior felt. i still have high respect for the evo but i just could not get past my honda loyalty. suby wasnt an option to me and nothing else compared...
ive got 21k on the odo now with only 6 months of ownership!

The reasons the Z owners gave for buying their Z, is pretty much the same reason alot of other S2000 owners bought their car. And the reason the S2000 people buy before test driving can be said for some or even most Z owners as well. There are enthusiasts for all kinds of car, so it applies to all. In reality, that same reason is why alot of people buy certain cars. I really don't see a difference. Of course there are a few that just buy cars without really knowing what their getting themselves into, but as I stated, thats for all cars in general. There is no label of any sort IMHO, when buying a car. It makes no sense labeling people on how they purchased their car. Being bought it before test driving, they rode in it and liked it, cause it looks good, or an enthusiast... Doesn't mean anything. They have their reasons and no labeling is needed. Just my .02.

Buying a car without test-driving it, is like marrying someone without sleeping with them first. I mean yeah, I guess people do it, but it's not the way I'd go about it.
I test drove just about every sporty car that was on the market in 2000 before I bought my S2K, though I knew it was the car I wanted before I started shopping. (Hopefully my wife doesn't read this and extend the analogy to it's logical conclusion... )

so you're basically saying S2000 is like a lingerie model that you want to ride even before you talk to her or hang out with her, but 350z is like a fat girl who you don't even think about hanging out until you slept with her and she turns out to be really good in bed so you decide to marry.
i could see that.

True; I can't imagine buying a car without taking a dozen or more test drives. I even drove three different versions of the S2000 before deciding which MY car to buy.
If I'd wanted a car that was easy to drive, and that pampered me, I migh have been more interested in the 350Z, but I don't see any comparison between the cars. The Z is for the masses; A sporty coupe. The S2000 is a niche market sports car. Almost like comparing a fast dirt bike to a fast F1 bike, in that there is not enough similarity to make any kind of valid comparison. Why not compare the S2000 to a Rolls Royce? Makers as much sense as comparing it to the 350Z, doesn't it?
