S2000 Buyer vs. 350 Z Buyer
I was out last night in Atlanta and I over heard a conversation at a bar. It was a bunch of people talking about the 350 Z. Several of them were owners who just happened to realize that other people were owners too. They were discussing their love for the Z and what made them purchase the car.
I was suprised at what they said. Most of the owners fell in love with the Z AFTER they drove it or rode with someone else and didn't really consider the car before hand. They said that the engine was so powerful and smooth and the car really drove well. They also said that they loved the features of the interior like the power seats and navi and the sound system.
S2000 owners on the other hand seem to have decided on the S2000 BEFORE they drove the car. I know that I decided on purchasing the S2000 before I even test drove the car back in 2002. I was more infactuated with the "idea" of the S2000 than the actual performance of the car.
So does this mean that S2000 owners are magazine racers and Z owners are in-the-flesh buyers?

I think your putting too much thought process into this. Does it really matter? One should buy what they like and can afford. Personally I purchased the S2000 after I drove it, as with all cars I bought. To me there is nothing more important than a test drive. There have been many a car that fell way short of my expectations after driven it.

I always liked the look of S2Ks when they first came out but never even thought about getting on. I was more than happy with my '97 Integra. But when I got a ride in one from one of my parents' neighbors, I was hooked and Had to have one. Less than a year later, I bought my S2K.

i drove the s and the Z back to back on the same day shopping for cars. while I loved all the things about the Z mentioned above, there was something visceral lacking in the driving experience. the shifter & pedals felt vague, the cabin large and dark.
i would have been happy with either, to be honest. the Z is a fantasic car, but i love my little red S too.

I don't think the generalization fits. If anything, the 350Z puts down more power on paper and has all the nice luxury bits that are missing from the S2000, like Nav and heated seats.
Personally, I looked for the S2000 because I love the way it looks. The sleek lines and drop top stance are just beautiful. I don't like the way the 350Z looks. Test driving the S2000 only made me fall in love with the car. haha.
My neighbor loves his 350Z because it does what he wants with comfort and torque. I love my S2000 because I get to cruise around with the top down and a revvy motor. But at least we can both agree on dark silver.
