After reading all the replies on here I am amazed at how many people Do Not Read.

There are not too many cars offered today with NO auto tranny option for the entire CHASSIS.

S2000, Elise, Viper... and then you start getting up into the exotics... (or more exotic)
This is such a fine line between a trim level and different model.

Based on what I quoted the Evo 8/9 should be included since it is a different chassis to the base lancer (and never officially had lancer in the name in the US). But the STi shares a chassis and name with the impreza so it would not be included.

In my opinion when thinking about if it is a model or trim level think how likely it is to be cross shopped with the other 'trim' levels.

i.e. An evo shopper is unlikely to seriously consider a base lancer, a civic si shopper may also consider a highly optioned non-si.

E46 M3s were 6MT or SMG its a manual with auto shift but does not have a torque converter so its a manual in my book....or does that fall under the 3 series line?

Also Porsche 997.2 comes with DSG or 6 speed no more torque converter.
SMG, DSG, etc... Do not count as true manuals (ie. pushing the clutch in with your left foot). They are no where near as fun to drive imo, I don't care if it has paddle shifters or not.

Nothing will ever substitute the driver involvement of a true manual and I hope cars will keep having it as an option..

I absolutely agree. It isn't a real manual transmission if it doesn't have a clutch.

By the way, and I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think the new CR-Z is going to only be available with a manual transmission.

agreed - paddle shifters in any way shape or form do not make an equal substitute for a 3rd pedal

The pre bangle m5s were manual only. I believe they ran til 2002 or 2003.
Incorrect. Bangle was the head of design since 1992.

Personally, I would not count those because they are essentially kit cars that you can legalize for road use. IMO, it'd be the same including the Superformance cars, Beck cars, WCM Ultralight, Ultima GTR, etc.

I consider SMG/DSG transmissions to be a third category.

You can't compare a torque converter slush-box to a SMG/DSG...
