Running different thread height on the Rear tires.
Well one my friends got flat tire on the sidewall and had to replace one of his rear tires, but he won't replace the other one... I guess he is just trying to be cheap. Will this hurt his differential? The other tire has about 30% left in it.

i think someone on this site did something like that and it heated up the diff or the lsd and eventually locked up one side (so the story went).
it was supposedly a wrong sized replacement tire from a shop until they got the right sized one in....... too bad the search engine is down...we could look it up...
who knows..... if your buddy is still alive, tell him to report the results in a week.

no way will this kill the diff - you're constantly going around corners, even very very slight ones.
Its very seldom that both wheels are turning at the EXACT rate - that's what the diff was designed for in the first place.

are you kidding me??? a tire with 100% and a tire with 30% has to be like a few mm different in size??? will this really kill the diff?
I have heard that AWD vehicles do not like you to put 1 new tire on with 3 semi worn out tires.... the AWD stuff just burns up quicker.... they advise you in the owners manual to not do that....
I would assume something similar with the rear of the S2000 due to the LSD.??

well, maybe in an extreme case, like if you put the spare donut tire on the rear - against what the owners manual says.
But if we're talking a 1mm difference due to tread wear, I would wager that nothing bad is going to happen.

yeah, i agree with you guys, about it not hurting the differential, i'm almost positive that i've read somewhere on the board that someone commented about not having the same tire thread hurt thier differential.
Well, once the search works, i'll try to find that thread.

i'd be more worried about traction issues than the diff. a few mm difference shouldn't hurt anything, but a 30% tire grips much differently than a 100% tire. i'd be worried about him losing it on a corner or in the rain.
