I think a 2004 "reskin" is a pretty valid rumor, but why would they kill the next gen. NSX sales with a 6cyl. S? I seriosly doubt ever seeing a 6cyl. S2K. Could an I-VTEC system be retrofitted to the F-20C? If so that may be a future possibility unless you believe all the hype about the almighty Z killing sales and getting the model yanked alltogether.
Sorry to bring this back to the top...

The S2000 has been proven as a "sports car" for three years now
I don't believe Honda would try to change future buyers minds with other choices. These are still a small production compared with other Hondas' and Acuras' (not the NSX). When you have a great car, keep the people wondering, but keep giving the masses what they want. In the future years with used car sales and the recent 0% financing we never know though....

This whole concept is foolish. All of Honda's production performance engines, sans NSX, are four cylinder. Honda is master of the inline four. It would not make sense for them to start dropping three liter sixes or even four liter V8s into a car that has more then enough power to begin with. I could see a displacement increase as long as all the current positive characteristic of the car could be retained, but the concept of a six cylinder or larger engine is preposterous.
