revving too high
I raced a Gs400 last night and i accidently reved past 9,000 rpm. I only have 1100 miles on my S2000. Does anyone know if I caused any damage to my engine? Everything seems fine but im still kinda worried. Has anyone done this before? Well, I beat the GS400 but I couldnt beat him in first gear. We ran 3 times and each time he beat me in pick up but I past him in 2nd gear. Well that was fun!

S2K has a rev-limiter It will just bounce off of it after 9200 rpm. I've personally hit the limiter a few times and there has not been any ill effects yet. I'm sure its not good to be hitting it in every gear, but if a kill is on the line I say go fot it.....

Make sure you know where your rev limiter is - just go out, make sure its been warmed up for a while, and in first, just nail it, and don't shift. You aren't going to break anything. Actually you will only if you misshift- say from second to third, but hitting first instead with the revs all the way up. That will indeed bend some valves as I've witnessed and has happened to a few others before. But its nothing to worry about. But seriously, go hit the rev limiter, and watch it bouce in the red for a few seconds.

Posters are correct no damage done...this is the function of the rev-limiter. But we should also point out that rule 1 noted does not apply if you red line a downshift. Do this and you'll be seeing the dealer in most cases (i.e. bent valves).

I've hit red line many times due to not looking at the tach but the road instead (probably a good thing?) It always ticks me off when the car lurches as the rev limiter kicks in, but I alwasy shift to the next gear and just take off.
So far, I have 5800+ miles on the car and no noticible damage to the engine.
However, I agree with UtahS2K that red lining in a downshift might/can cause damage. I always look at the speed before I downshift. I know what red line is in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I don't have a need (right now) to know what red line is in 4th as I have only hit 120 in 4th and not been close to red line. I'm not sure I have the guts to find out either.
Anyway, have fun and drive her the way she was designed to be driven.

I spent 100,000 miles bouncing off the 8,250 RPM rev limiter of my del Sol VTEC (10.X:1 Compression). Half of my accelerations I bounced off of. Not a single problem with the engine (sold it needing a clutch though)....
