I've found that 1500 rpms works well in most situations. If you're in traffic, sometimes they haul a** and sometimes they creep along. When in creep mode, 1200 rpms works well too. It's just enough to insure that you probably won't stall it but won't have you running up the backside of the car in front of you either.
There's also a certain technique in feathering the throttle in as you're feathering the clutch out that goes a long way toward "not" killing the engine. All it is, is practice!

The lowest rpms I can get away with, basically the idle speed. Once the clutch has come all the way out and the system is completely engaged then I stand on the gas. For me this car is not for stop light wars so I'm real easy on the clutch.
For stop light wars I have the truck, and for that you have to be careful to NOT step on the gas too hard...
