Default Reverse gear

today while i was out driving i got really frustrated that i cant get into REVERSE. I push the knob down, even while i was parked trying to push it down with 2 hand it wont go down. All my attempt failed with the car going into 6 gear instead.

There are days that reverse would be so easy to get into and there is today where i couldn't get into reverse to save my life. finally when i got home, i was able to get the car into reverse really easy. X_X

Is there a trick to getting the S into Reverse gear?

I came from a 00 celica gts so reverse was quite easy to go in and out. I dont think its my driving because i have been driving stick for 6 years.

I think all S2000's have this problem. Just try putting into another gear first, then going to reverse.

I usually flick into third to align things, then go to reverse.

yep, this is how I do it too. Even the owners manual suggests putting into another gear before trying to engage reverse. I have also found it slightly easier to move the shifter to the far right then push down, rather then pushing down with the shifter centered then moving over to reverse.

The reverse gear is typically a spur gear (the teeth are straight) where as your other gears are usually helical gears (the teeth are slanted). The spur gears are harder to sync up and are also why it makes the whining sound when you back up faster or for a distance. This is true of all manual cars but I would assume with the shorter throw and tighter transmission on the S it makes the difficulty all the more noticable.

My older celica had the same issue. Just use a different gear first.

How long has it been since your transmission fluid was last changed? How many miles ago? Perhaps its time to change it again? Just a suggestion.

Hehe at first I was thinking at how I never had any problems with my reverse gear, but after reading the comments, its probably because I park my car in first (thus having the gears all lined up).
