mute is easy for radios that have a telephone mute wire input. All you do is hook up a relay.

Radio Shack Cat.#: 275-226
You need to hook terminal 86 and 87 to ground.
Terminal 85 hooks up to the yellow/blue wire from clip and terminal 30 goes to the telephone mute wire of your stereo.

This has a side effect with some radios though. If you mute it using the dash, then push volume up, if the stereo automatically unmutes itself, the led on the dash stays on. All you have to do is push the mute button again on the dash.

My first take on my direct Sony adapter will require the mute do this, later, I might try to incorporate it in the adapter.

Of course I will. I've already tested 2 buttons and they work. I just have to test out all 4. I think then the hardest part will be trying to figure out how to lay it all out on a circuit board to make it as small as possible. This project has definitely made me brush up on my EE skills.

One of the problems I've had from day 1 is finding a 1/8" plug that will fit in the hole of the radio. I found one that was small enough to test with if I removed the casing. On my sony, they decided to put metal pieces that form to the RM-X4S 1/8" stereo plug. The plug's casing is pretty small (7mm). So if anyone finds a stereo 1/8" plug that has casing that is 7mm or smaller, let me know. I could use it. If I can't find one what I might end up doing is leaving off the casing and wrapping the guts in shrink plastic. I hope I find one though because it would be much cleaner and professional looking.

Nice work David! I know that Sony uses some off-sized plugs for their chargers for their discman and other products (I suppose so that you have to buy Sony accessories).

BTW, I note all the testimonials for Pinky, and my applause for David's open-info effort is not meant as a criticsm of Pinky's enterprise.

I never said I had the end all be all of this dash controls. I just saw a problem and created a solution. It works for most all radio's. I didnt want to have a Sony only solution. Plus im not all that impressed with their stuff. But that is just my opinion.

I will say though your problem is not going to be the mute it will be the mode button. Have fun and good luck!

pinky is right. the mode button's resistance is much higher than the rest and some adapters might not respond to this that weren't designed specifically for the s2000. This is the problem with the SWI-3. The fix is to lower the effective resistance of all buttons by putting a resistor in parallel to the dash buttons.

As is well documented on PAC's site complete with wiring instructions. Mind you, shouldn't really be a issue if you're making a custom adaptor.

Right, I know. I was directing my comment to Skarv's post about the adapters at Circuit City.

I'd heard about Pinky's mod for the head unit but during the time thinking about it I dropped into my local car radio store and have been assured Pioneer now have their own adaptor for the S2000 dash controls. The bloke who runs the store is a bit backward so I'm not entirely convinced but I'll order it tomorrow and see what happens and let you know if anyone is interested. He reckoned it would be about 55 quid which is roughly $80.

Hi

Good to hear a UK voice on this subject. Please let me know how you get on. Are you making any other mods to the stereo?
Good luck with the adaptor.
