Is it possible to replace the factory audio headunit with an after market one (let's say Sony) that still works with the audio controls on the dash?

do a search for pinky's stereo mod. It allows you to use any aftermarket stereo with existing dash controls.

Pinky sells his adapter at a very high markup over the actual cost of the hardware you need. If you do the search recommended above, you will find all the info you need. If you like to tinker, you can hook up the controls yourself.

Good luck!

I'm actually working on a mod for a direct hookup to a sony that supports the wired remote. I'm getting further along on it. I still have to do a couple more tests, then find a good layout on the circuitboard. After using the mod that pinky uses, I was inspired to find a way to hook it up directly because the little IR "eye" that sticks out bothers me. God I'm so anal.

STK:

My understanding is that it is fairly easy to make most of the controls work with the standard adapters they sell at Circuit city.

The place you need serious help is to make the Mute button work.

Pinky has done the research and development to make this work. In addition, I believe his mod will allow you to remap the buttons to things that suit you better. I for one would nix the mode button to get a 'skip back' button. But these are personal prefs.

Finally, it is a matter of opinion, but I think pinky's mod is fairly priced given the effort and logistics that he will undertake for you... not to mention development time.

IMHO of course.

I have a Sony CDX-M750 with Pinky's PAC, 10 disc changer, amp, and NEO 35 MP3 player.

Pinky's price is fair! He puts a lot of quality work and time into his mod it is a fine polished product. imho
