Repainting my car. Will it diminish the value?
Hello, I have a 2002 s2k. It was originally silver, and repainted grey. I am going to sand it down to factory paint and repaint everything except the engine bay. It will be a good paint job. I was wondering how the color might affect the value if I painted it:
1. Nardo Grey (same color as it is now) Pros: looks sick, color is slightly similar to silver, easier to paint because no pearl, looks good with black front lip cons: not stock
2. Laguna blue. Pros: seems a little rare, looks sick Cons: Harder to paint, engine bay not being painted will be more obvious.
3. Original silver. Pros: stock, engine bay will match Cons: Boring
4. A Darker Silver: Pros: kind of a compromise. It will sort of match the engine bay. Cons: kinda boring

First, does it really matter? Is resale value more important than how much you like the car you are investing money in? I mean, it is good either way, but think about that first. If resale is so important I guess repaint it factory and use only OEM parts. Otherwise, paint it the color that makes you happiest.
Personally, life is too short to treat EVERYTHING as some bland investment scenario. Drive, paint, mod your car the way that makes you enjoy owning it the most. Otherwise it will have little feeling to you eventually and will be just another investment. Just my $.02

Maybe try something like an Imola Orange (Spelling?) which was used on Canadian cars from what I understand. I ran into this guy in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago when I was there visiting. I pulled over and talked with him. It is not the Imola but a custom job and added the shark gills on the side.
It looked terrific; it positively glowed. The engine bay was painted.

Very few paint jobs really ever be as meticulous as the factory paint job as far as coverage, consistency, etc. If I were looking for a car to purchase it would probably be pretty obvious if a car was repainted anyways, even in a factory color (engine bay, door jams, perhaps overspray, missing vin stickers, etc.). Since your car has already been repainted I would say it's a non-issue. Go crazy and paint it whatever you will enjoy the most!
