it's past redline for only a tiny fraction of a second before cutoff, so would the beeper make that much difference?

No, this is nothing like the RX-8. I have a MY04, with an 8000RPM redline. With this wonderful device, I hear a loud beep (easy to hear on the track at any speed, top up or down) at 7300, another one at 7500, another one at 7700, and a solid tone at 7900. You can set it for whatever you want, and it's easy to change (for instance, if you ever have to leave your car with a valet parker, you can set it to beep constantly at 3000rpm ).

So, without looking at the dash, I know precisely where the engine is as I approach redline.

When accelerating out of a slow corner in second or third gear, the beeps come pretty quickly, and are just a good warning to shift before you hit the rev limiter. But it also is very useful in letting you decide whether to shift or ride it out at just shy of redline (e.g., only 30 more feet until the next corner in an autox, or you've run out of fifth gear, and you know that, for what's left of the straight, sixth won't get you any more speed and will just cost another downshift).

The single most cost-effective mod you can get for these cars if you autocross or track your car, IMO.

What's past redline?

You can set Modifry's Shift Beeper to start at any RPM you like and to beep at 3 intervals after that. Mine beeps at 8300 (peak power), 8600, 8900 and 9200 (fuel cutout). Very useful.

Absolutely! You set it so that you hear it, react to it, initiate your shift by the time the tach gets to redline. If you wait till redline and you're not looking, sure you'll hit the cut-off, but this should not be used as your notification to shift. Bouncing off the rev limiter not only makes you slower, but repeatedly doing this is not a good thing for the engine. The cut-off is there to save you from over-rev the occasional time. It's not there to act as an indicator of when to shift.

did any of you install the optional functionalities? I couldn't think of a good reason to, but maybe I could be convinced otherwise.

Not yet. The valet mode looks good if you often give out your keys. I will be installing a small LED warning light to go with the beep.

I did not; I don't drive the S2000 when there's any chance of handing over the keys to a valet parker.

I did install the optional warning beeper on Modifry's engine coolant temperature gauge mod, so that if I don't notice it getting hot, I am notified in no uncertain terms when the coolant temperature exceeds 220 degrees F. When on the track, I may not notice the temperature gauge, and I want notice if it goes that high.
