Default rear glass window

i went to the dealer yesterday and they were willing to replace the plastic window with a new one, but if i wanted the upgrade to glass then, it would be 1,500.00... Is this rediculous or what? Give some thought or better prices at your delaer...

I don't think you can simply replace the plastic part with a glass insert. You have to replace the whole top plus some of the frame as well.

Call me crazy, but I'd almost be willing to pay it. I loathe using plastic polish every week (or so).

Note I said almost

I agree. The way our tops fold down now...it seems as if replacing just the galss would be impossible. Maybe it's $1500 to replace everything.

personally, I WOULD pay $1500 for a glass window! I see these older Mercedes and BMWs and they just look horrible. I've considered a hard top but I hate having my top up. The only time I put my top up is when it is raining. So, i'm considering putting a glass window in the S. The only thing I haven't decided is aftermarket or stock?
desicions, decisions!

My suspicion is that these cars have not been cared for properly. The people that own them probably use glass cleaner and dishwashing detergent on their rear (plastic) windows. Good chance they also get a lot of time sitting out in the sun.

While $1.5k is steep but I wonder if an aftermarket one will be any less - if there ever is one.

My big question about the new windowed top is, what needs to be replaced should the glass break and how much will that cost?
If anyone can find out, let us know.

Maybe you should ask your dealer which parts they will be replacing. Just the window/insert or whole top? Then I guess we can see wheather or not 1.5K is worth it.

Right now, the rear portion of the top costs $250 to replace. (Check the parts places).

I am sure that it will only be about $400 or so for that same replacement section of the top with glass when the 2002 comes out.

Now this does not account for the price of the defroster switch and wiring. If you have to figure in those parts as well as the labor to replace all of it --- I could almost see a price of $1000-$1200.
