I've owned 3 Valentines. I've had one ticket in the 4 years. Apparently the cop didn't need a radar gun to figure out that I was going 100+ in a 60 because the V didn't make a sound. Anyhow, I know for certain that that lil bugger (the Valentine, not the cop) saved me from at least 5 tickets. Would a less expensive radar detector have done the same? I don't know. I don't care. When Valentine puts out a newer version of their detector, I'm buyin' it. If they raise the price to $500, I'm buyin' it. I love the "insult arrows," I love knowing from whence the bogey is coming...It puts you on a par with the cops, you KNOW where they are, it's not just a beep, and can change your driving accordingly. It's worth the extra $100. It'd be worth an extra $300. After you drive through a speed trap and watch the arrows change from forward to side to back and then look in the rear-view and spot the cop hidden behind a billboard, and realize that an ordinary fuzz-buster would have just beeped inanely then peetered off...you'll not regret the extra $100, believe me.
As an aside, if you get a Valentine, and don't like it, they're going on eBay for about $50 under cost. It's not much of a gamble...

I have both. 8500 is great because it falses less on CT highways (lots of X and K falses). Its perfect for my truck or the A4 because I don't do anything where I need a huge warning way ahead of time to slow down...
The V-1 is for sportscars. It will give you that extra bit of warning needed to pull back down from speed. But this is at the expense of a chatty detector that falses a lot. Sensitivity is a good thing though when you are pushing it.
